Key Concerns: What Matters Most to Americans This Election Season
The Economy
The sentiment among voters is clear: more than two-thirds expressed concern that inflation is trending in the wrong direction. Additionally, nearly three-quarters highlighted the disconcerting reality that price hikes are outpacing gains in household income.
Immigration
Immigration has always been an election issue. However, the current crisis at the border has put immigration front and center in the 2024 election. According to a recent Gallup poll, immigration is the country's single most important problem for the first time since 2019.
Courts are bogged down with a record number of asylum requests, neary 10,000 migrants are crossing the border per day, and the current system in place is simply overwhelmed.
Many Americans now worry that the influx of immigrants is affecting other aspects of life. This includes everything from government spending and national security to crime. More importantly, the government seems paralyzed to solve the immigration problem.
Abortion
Abortion has been top of mind for voters for nearly two years when a Supreme Court decision eliminated federal protections for the procedure. This resulted in a variety of state laws across the country which are both messy and confusing. This in turn has galvanized women voters across the country.
A recent Wall Street Journal poll of seven battleground states found that 39% of suburban women cite abortion as a make-or-break issue for their vote. This is the most pressing election issue of the group, with three-quarters of them saying the procedure should be legal all or most of the time. They also believe that Trump’s policies are far too restrictive.
Adding fuel to the fire is Arizona’s near-total ban on abortion by the Arizona state Supreme Court, upholding an 1864 law. This ruling only intensifies the abortion issue across the country and could be the prominent issue in the 2024 election.
The War in Gaza
Americans are also split on whether the U.S. should continue to provide military aid to Israel. The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll shows that 47% of Americans say they would be more likely to support a 2024 presidential candidate who continues to support Israel, while 48% say they would be less likely to support a candidate who does so.
Preserving Democracy
Another poll shows that President Biden’s biggest strength is his approach toward political extremism and threats to democracy. This may be the first election where preserving democracy is on the ballot, a thought that would have been inconceivable just a decade ago.
